Mudjacking in the United States

Raise a sunken slab without tearing it out and starting over.

What the work involves

Mudjacking, also called slabjacking, raises a sunken concrete slab by pumping a cement-soil slurry through small holes drilled in the surface. The slurry fills the void beneath the slab and lifts it back toward its original position. It is used on driveways, sidewalks, garage floors, and exterior slabs that have dropped as the soil beneath them settled or washed away.

The process is faster and less disruptive than tearing out and replacing a slab, and the holes drilled for injection are small enough that the surface can be patched and used again within a day. It suits situations where voids have formed under a concrete surface but the slab itself is not badly cracked or broken. A free quote is available on request.

Do any of these match your property?

  • A concrete driveway, sidewalk, or patio slab that has sunk on one side and created a trip hazard
  • A garage floor that slopes toward the door rather than draining toward a floor drain
  • Voids visible beneath a slab edge where soil has washed or settled away
  • A pool deck or patio that rocks underfoot because support has been lost unevenly
  • Steps that have separated from the house and tilted forward
  • A basement floor slab that has dropped in one area while the perimeter remains level

How the work gets done

  1. Void location

The specialist probes the slab and checks for hollow spots by tapping and using ground probes to map where voids or weak soil sit beneath the concrete.

  2. Hole drilling

A grid of small-diameter holes is drilled through the slab at spacings and angles calculated to reach the voids identified beneath.

  3. Slurry injection

A cement-soil slurry is pumped through each hole under controlled pressure, filling voids and lifting the slab back toward its original level while the specialist monitors the surface.

  4. Hole plugging

Each drill hole is filled with a matching concrete plug, the slab surface is cleaned, and level readings are recorded to confirm the achieved lift.

Conditions that affect a mudjacking job

Void size and location

Larger voids beneath a slab require more slurry to fill and stabilize. A specialist probes the slab before drilling to map where material has washed out and how far the void extends.

Slab condition

Mudjacking lifts and supports a slab but does not repair cracks in the concrete itself. Where a slab is badly fractured, a specialist will advise whether lifting is practical or whether replacement makes more sense.

Soil type beneath the slab

Sandy or silty soils that have washed away respond well to mudjacking. Expansive clay that has dried and contracted may require a different approach, since the clay can continue to shrink after treatment.

Cure time and return to use

The slurry mix typically reaches working strength within 24 to 48 hours. Most treated slabs can be walked on the same day, though vehicle loading usually waits until the mix has fully set.
